“David LaChappelle – Visual Artist, not, Comedian
I decided, to stick to the Chirstmas inspired posts, and go briefly back a decade, and look at David LaChappelle’s “Jesus is my Homeboy” series.
The tag line, a phrase, an ideology, a message and salvation – Jesus is my Homeboy – has a power beyond race colour or creed. To know the original story behind this powerful phrase, go to http://www.jesusismyhomeboy.com/the_story
Today as I look at Artist David LaChappelle’s series “Jesus is my Homeboy”, I see an artistic commentary that takes this essentially urban-religious-saviour-story, and puts a visual language that is very L.A. It is modern, contemporary, sexual and highlights the trash-glam factor that is synonymous with L.A., California – and asks the viewer to re-act, to judge.
What has to be said and has to be felt is at the doorstep of the Viewer…need I say more?

My Inspiration : A 90s child myself, this series was very much referenced throughout platforms that were my cultural go-tos. Chapelle collaborated with Musicians and Artists alike, to bring his creations to life. You could not escape it, or his influence. Hence, I decided to revisit his “Jesus is my Homeboy”.
